Our Philosophy of Worship, the Word and Prophecy
Since the purpose and focus of our existence is glorifying God through our relationship with Him, it stands to reason that communication is central. Communication with God, like all communication, is two-way. We speak and God listens. God speaks and we listen. How do we engage in this communication?
In worship, we give God our undivided attention and respond to Him with extravagant praise. This offering of ourselves to God permeates every part of our days and simply continues when we gather with other believers on Sunday. The Bible has much to say about the many forms of worship. A brochure is available in the front lobby brochure rack that details what God’s Word says on the subject of expressing worship. Christ Community is committed to being a place of free and extravagant worship. We urge you to express your worship to God without shame or fear in the way that is most meaningful to you. God is your audience.
Not only does the Bible guide our expression of worship, it is the primary tool that the Holy Spirit uses to teach us and build our faith. God speaks to us in His revealed Word. We must worship God with the truth about ourselves and Him, approaching Him as we are and as He has revealed Himself to be. The Spirit-led, systematic teaching of God’s Word equips us to honestly, humbly and confidently worship Him in practical obedience throughout our day.
In addition, we believe God speaks to us prophetically. He might do this through nature, dreams, visions, another person, an inner “voice” and events. He creatively uses many tools to reveal Himself. Prophecy is simply hearing God speak and communicating what He says in love and wisdom when it is needed and appropriate. Its primary purpose is “edification, encouragement and consolation” (I Corinthians 14:3). While we welcome the prophetic ministry (Acts 2:17-18; I Cor. 14:1, 3), we believe that the Bible is the infallible, unchanging Word of God and that all “words” must be measured against His absolute standard. God calls on us not to “treat prophesies with contempt. Test everything. Hold onto what is good. Avoid every kind of evil” (I Thess. 5:20-22). He also requires that we “do everything decently and in order” (particularly in the areas of tongues and prophecy – I Corinthians 14). Therefore, we ask that if you believe you have a prophetic word for the Body that you write it out and submit it to one of our Elders or Pastors who will determine its appropriateness for the moment.
